May 30, 2023: The U.S. Embassy to Mauritius is pleased to announce the groundbreaking of the new U.S. Embassy Campus in Moka Smart City.
An official ceremony to mark the historic event was held this morning in the presence of Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma, and U.S. Ambassador to Mauritius Henry Jardine.
The United States will invest approximately $300 million (Rs14 billion) in this project. The new U.S. Embassy Campus will provide a secure, sustainable, and modern platform to support the U.S. Embassy’s mission to represent the people of the United States to the Republic of Mauritius. The new modern, state-of-the-art and eco-friendly embassy will also improve the experience for visa applicants and provide a modern functional platform to support bilateral relations and diplomacy between the United States and Mauritius.
The new U.S. Embassy facility will comprise a new Chancery and support buildings as well as entry gates and perimeter security barriers. The image will be one of openness and welcome and will reflect the best of American architectural expression balanced within the overall Moka Smart City development. The architecture and construction integrate the latest practices and sustainable design, and use modern systems devised to conserve natural resources. The facility landscape design is restorative of rich lush vegetation, including tree canopy and native flora. The new embassy facility integrates with the Moka Smart City, adhering to some of the Smarty City objectives to promote innovation, sustainability, efficiency, quality of life, environmental conservation, and sustainable energy practices.
During remarks at the ceremony, Deputy Secretary of State Verma said, “This event to break ground on the new U.S. Embassy Campus is a perfect symbol of the United States’ commitment to elevating our engagement with Mauritius and with this vital region. I am here to deliver a message from President Biden and the American people: Today we are here to open a new chapter in U.S.-Mauritian relations. The New Embassy Campus will serve as a strong symbol of the United States’ commitment to Mauritius – and to our deepening engagement in the East African Islands region. This symbolic groundbreaking ceremony is the culmination of years of tireless work between U.S. and Mauritian officials. We will ensure that this new embassy will serve the people of Mauritius and the United States every step of the way.”
